AHC Statement of Significance The Pumping Station was erected in 1884 by the Railways Department and housed the equipment necessary for obtaining river water for railway engines and to work the hydraulic wool presses on the wharf. The large rectangular brick structure is articulated by a pier and arch system and has simple slender arched windows. Goulburn Weir, Stuart Murray Channel, Murchison Pump Site and the 1885 National Channel. These works, which were interconnected, were exceptionally large public works undertakings in the 1880s. The high standard of design and construction showed professional excellence. The 1885 'National' channel, being 137 km long was the first significant irrigation channel in Australia.
